A friendly friendly

Yesterday the male students from various counties in Nyanza took it to another level by carrying on with what they have been doing every weekend. They hosted an inter-county football match friendly which grants the final winner the champion of the week. On the got midday sun of Saturday, the teams carried out their warm-ups as usual with the target of "who will emerge to be the winner"

Safaricom stretching the horizons

Safaricom has today boosted the depth of the university volleyball team squad with full jerseys inclusive of socks. The jerseys were provided for both the male and female players in the squad. Safaricom opened up an initiative online to support communities with deficiencies. One of the volleyball team member applied for the sponsorship and was lucky as they were awarded with the jerseys.

Safaricom provided 25 complete set of  tshirt and shorts, 25 pairs of socks, 2 balls and 1 volleyball net.

This has really boosted the team as they had been previously sharing their old uniforms which were insufficient in number. The sponsorship leaves them with a struggle to find new sports shoes.

Having qualified for the nationals, the volleyball team will now be shining with their new uniforms as they aim to win the tournament. The sponsor also arranged for a mini friendly match among the team.

The volleyball team vice captain Giddings Muok was very thankful for the sponsorship on behalf of his fellow teammates and the university and assured the team more productivity. He was also thankful to Safaricom and urged them to expand their sponsorship to other sports like football to more universities locally.

For The Love Of The Gym

The annual fee for Fitness as they've named it here in Moi university fitness center is Ksh. 1000. If you look at how much you have to pay in one month than this is a really good price. With that price comes good quality. First, to start going to the gym you have to do a ’Fitness Intake’ where you have to show your competence with gym equipment. It sounds frightening but actually you just do your own training for an hour and they will look if you do anything that threatens the others or yourself. There were around 10 people doing the intake at the same time with me and none of them failed. The fact that the gym does something like this really shows their concern for the health of the clients not just for the money they make.
Another thing is that the gym is well equipped. You have your areas for dumbbells, bars, cardio, stretching and a variety of different strength-exercise equipment. The only problem is probably the size. There are many students in Moi so the gym gets extremely crowded in the evening. The earlier you get there the better, or just go in the weekend. The final signs of quality are my favorite rules in the gym here: flip-flops are forbidden and a towel is mandatory. Besides eliminating the chance of having to use sweaty equipment, people wearing proper sports clothing and cleaning up after themselves creates a good atmosphere.
I believe the gym-enthusiasts have been addressed now. If you’re looking for something more than lifting weights on your own(you can do it in a group as well) then you’ve got plenty to choose from.

Soccer specials

Sport. One of the best things ever. Helps you going in the morning or helps you get your thoughts away after a long day. Sport is the perfect drug in my opinion: besides being pleasurable, its also good for your health (check out my last week’s blog for more details). I love sports so do most of us.
Luckily, sports have been made easily accessible for a student in Moi University. Moi is centrally located with almost what every student would need for his/her stay in the course of his/her study. No student needs to travel to get better place for exercise. But an even better thing is that there are numerous kinds of exercises one can take part in. football, karate, taekwondo, basketball, rugby, gym, athletics just to mention but a few.
Let me take you through the sport soccer

All a student is required to do is to join one of the many soccer societies available for officiation. He/she can keep training with the mates as he/she enjoys the fruits that come along playing soccer like fitness, trips and many more.
For the gym enthusiasts, don’t feel left out. Next week I’ll bring a whole new article on what you need to know about gym while around Moi university. Keep checking…

SPORTS_The ultimate life saver

Sports is not only for competition but also for physical fitness, mental health, socializing among others. The freedom enjoyed by university students has created laxity. Many students spend most of their time getting medication to diseases that would otherwise be prevented by sufficient exercise.

If you joined a sports club then definitely you have to be involved in the competitions hosted for/by the club. Is that really true?

Of course not.
Lemme give you a little secret. When we wake up in the morning with the aim to exercise, it may then be too dark, cold or wet to get us moving.  So, what can we do?  If you do not like the cold or the rain, treat yourself to some warmer/waterproof clothing or look at the weather forecast and plan your day so that you can exercise when it is not raining or during the warmest part of the day.  If you do not like the dark or exercising alone, exercise at lunch in built-up areas or find a buddy to train with so that you will have company and an additional reason for completing the session (so not to let your friend down). Moi has several fields which provide great facilities for runners and footballers of all levels to help increase their commitment to exercise.

Lastly, one of the most important things when planning exercise is to choose something that you like and enjoy.  If you don’t like running, then don’t plan to run because you will spend more time debating whether to run or not.  Work out how to do your exercise of choice.  If you like skating or playing soccer, can you purchase a second-hand indoor skate/football to replicate your training inside?  Once you have removed your barriers to exercise, you can then determine why you are going to train.

Do you think this can save us the time and resources spent on treatment of lifestyle diseases and infections like obesity?
